What I have learned about action research and how I might be able to use it

Thus far I have learned that action research is a highly effective tool to be used by teachers and administrators as it is versatile, comprehensive and easily applicable. Given the focus on reflection and action defined by four transparent steps, the ability to complete action research and implement one’s learning is realistic for those involved in the education system at all levels.  Action research provides an opportunity for those working within the education system to be the experts, or knowledge generators, at solving their own problems within the classroom, school and district at large. The concepts are also general enough in nature to be applied to a variety of problems and circumstances thus empowering those without research experience to take a risk with hopes of making improvements.

Within my current role as Director of Admissions at a Catholic school, I envision action research being most helpful in decreasing barriers to prospective student enrollment as well as improving current student and parent satisfaction with the goal of increasing retention. It has been my experience that often times both administration and I make efforts to improve enrollment without being fully aware of the problems which impact people’s interest in the school and the willingness of current families to remain with us. Action research would provide a more objective process for identifying opportunities for improvement and creating sound solutions.
